A real AI citation guarantee covers the agency’s process, not the engine’s output. No agency controls what ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Overviews cite, so a promise that your business will be named cannot be verified or kept. A guarantee you can check names the work the agency will do, the evidence it will show you and who signs it off.
This matters when you compare proposals. Two agencies can both use the word “guarantee” while promising very different things. The sections below show how to tell them apart.
Why can’t an outcome guarantee be verified?
An outcome guarantee cannot be verified because each answer engine decides on its own what to cite, and answers change from one session to the next. The agency does not run those engines and cannot see or set their rules. Asking the same question twice, a day apart, can produce two different lists of sources.
A promise of “guaranteed ChatGPT mentions” therefore asks you to trust a result the agency does not control. The only way to test it is to run the questions yourself, on more than one day, and compare the answers.
Engines also differ from each other. A business named by one assistant can be absent from another on the same day, so a result reported for a single engine says little about the rest.
What can a process guarantee promise?
A process guarantee can promise the steps that are within the agency’s control and show you the proof of each one. Five commitments are checkable:
- Tracked questions: an agreed list of buying questions tested on named engines every month.
- Dated evidence: each answer recorded with the engine, date, location and a screenshot.
- Source-traced corrections: when an engine states a wrong fact, the likely source is logged, a correction is proposed and it is applied only with your approval.
- Human sign-off: a named person reviews all work before it is published or delivered.
- A monthly report: what was tested, what was found and what changed.
Each item produces a record you can read, so you can confirm the agency did what it said even when an engine’s answer did not change. That record also lets you leave: if the agency stops doing the work, the gap is visible in the report.
What five questions should you ask an agency?
Ask five questions before you sign, and expect written answers to each:
- Which questions will you track, and on which engines? A real answer is a list, not a promise.
- What exactly appears in the monthly report? Ask to see a blank template.
- What happens when an engine states a wrong fact about my business? Look for a logged source and a correction you approve.
- Who reviews the work, and is the reviewer named in the report?
- What does the guarantee not cover? A credible agency states its limits, such as rankings, traffic, revenue and inclusion in any third-party answer.

What red flags should you look for in a proposal?
Four phrases signal an outcome promise: “guaranteed mentions,” “guaranteed first position in AI answers,” a fixed number of citations per month, and a refund tied to an engine’s behavior. Each depends on a result the agency cannot control.
A missing definition is a fifth flag. If the proposal does not say which engines, which questions and which evidence count, there is nothing to check. Ask for the definition in writing before you compare prices.
Ask to see a sample report, with client details removed, before you sign. A report that shows dated answers, screenshots and a reviewer’s name is evidence of how the agency works. A report that shows only a score or a chart does not show how the score was produced.
How is AvantScale’s Citation Guarantee worded?
AvantScale’s Citation Guarantee is a commitment about how the work is done, not about results. Section 4 of the Terms of Service says that, for every retainer account, AvantScale will track the agreed priority questions on the named engines each month, log any AI answer that conflicts with approved facts with its likely source and a severity rating, propose a correction for each one and apply it at the source only after client approval, have a human specialist review all work before delivery, and provide a monthly report.
The Terms also state what is not guaranteed: rankings, traffic, revenue, patient volume, review removal and inclusion in any third-party AI answer. The same wording is the standard to hold any agency to. The consulting and audits page describes how AvantScale runs a baseline test, and the Pricing page shows what each retainer includes.
AI citation guarantee: FAQ
Can any agency guarantee ChatGPT mentions?
No. ChatGPT decides what to say on each answer, and the agency has no control over that choice. An agency can guarantee its own process: the questions it tracks, the evidence it records and the corrections it proposes.
What evidence should a monthly report include?
At minimum: the list of questions tested, the engines used, the test date and location, whether the business was named in each answer, who was named instead, any wrong facts with their likely sources, and a screenshot for each answer. The report should also name the reviewer.
What happens if an engine states a wrong fact about my business?
A good process logs the wrong statement, traces the likely source such as an outdated directory listing, rates its severity and proposes a correction. The correction is applied at the source with your approval. Whether the engine then changes its answer is the engine’s decision.
